Business Continuity Scenario Simulation

Conduct regular scenario simulations to ensure your business continuity plans are in place in your organisation. Scenario planning exercises will protect your Business Continuity Management investment. Your plans must be subjected to a strict maintenance routine in order to prevent:

  • Business continuity plans falling into disuse.
  • Business continuity plans becoming dated. It is critical that your plans keep abreast of change otherwise the resources that are being relied upon for recovery from an incident may not meet the requirements of the day.

Maintenance is therefore an ongoing process whereby your plans are regularly tested, reviewed and updated. Testing your IT business continuity plan will invariably involve recovering the relevant system. One of the best ways of testing your business continuity plans and raising your employees’ awareness of the BCM programme, is by means of scenario simulation workshops.

Scenario Simulation Methodology

  • ContinuitySA inspects your company’s offices in order to develop a factual scenario which will result in a realistic and demanding exercise.
  • Circumstances and events are presented in a manner which enables us to measure your employees’ ability to remain focused on core issues under conditions of stress.
  • Your employees are encouraged to interact with each other during the unfolding set of events, and all actions are recorded for later evaluation.
  • The plans are under evaluation during the exercise, not your employees. The objective is to create an environment where employees can be trained and familiarised with the plan in action.
  • The exercise provides the opportunity for your employees to work with the plans in a “live” environment. This instills confidence in participants who learn that plans can be relied on in a crisis.
  • The exercise highlights deficiencies in the plans which can be updated or rectified, whilst also validating the accuracy of actions and procedures.
  • The scenario-planning environment highlights the need for decisiveness, particularly when outage tolerances are crucial.
  • Team members see how the process develops and how the situation is managed. This is highly instructive, even from an observer status.
  • Senior management experiences the benefits of business continuity management, and gains comfort in the fact that recovery is possible within an acceptable timeframe.
  • Contents of the plan can be continuously enhanced.

On completion of the business continuity scenario simulation, your company receives a management report together with a summary of observations and recommendations.
